Frustrating and disappointing
The Auberge de la Source hotel is beautifully situated in the Normandy countryside and our was fine and as expected. We specifically booked dinner at the hotel expecting a fine dining experience. That’s when things started to go wrong
We booked for 8:00pm and 8:15 was confirmed. Odd, but OK. . . As we arrived for dinner at 8:00 I explained we were early and asked if we could have a drink in the bar. There isn’t a bar. But we were invited to sit the blazing log fire which looked inviting. But there was very little space and I found myself sitting about 6 inches from a diner. To give them a bit more personal space I moved closer to the fire. However we were soon uncomfortably hot. We had a drink, but weren’t offered any more. After about 45 minutes my wife asked if we could go to our table. We ordered a bottle of wine. We were poured one glass and the waiter then disappeared with the bottle. Our food turned up. My wife ordered the beef tomato which didn’t really seem like a main course, but the choice was very limited. I ordered a steak with foie gras. The steak was small, and quite tough, and the foie grass portion about the size of the end of your small finger. We eventually secured the waiter and asked for our wine back. It took about 5 minutes. We sat at our table for about 20 minutes after our main course with no service at all. Eventually we again accosted the waiter and asked for the desert menu. Again, we waited 15 minutes until a reluctant waitress headed our way. By now it was about 10:00pm and we were the only people in the restaurant. We were asked whether we wanted anything. I responded truthfully that it was too late and we had lost interest. This was ‘translated’ by the waitress as: “OK, you are full then, no problem.” Maybe she misunderstood us. . . So overall, considering the luxury prices – one night with dinner cost us €650 – very frustrating and disappointing.

Really very good, we will be back again.
Excellent food, super staff, lovely setting, a great place to stay.
Pillows either too large or too small.
