    Four stars not warranted - housekeeping lets it down.

    The location is perfect for exploring the centre of Chester. The bed was comfortable. Breakfast was good but see below.....

    We arrived 20 minutes early and the officious girl on reception said we couldn't check in early without paying for the privilege unless we were IHG members. After a long drive and getting lost trying to find the hotel, I was not impressed. She relented and gave us keys to room 139, which we entered at 2.50pm to find overflowing bins, detritus of other guests and an unmade bed. We returned to reception and after complaining, were moved to room 140. The bed was comfortable although the sheets seemed too small for it and were not tucked in at the sides. The easy chair was very old and uncomfortable - felt like the seat had broken. Lots of dust in the corners and edges of the carpet, which had several marks on it. Big cobweb hanging from the ceiling, which was removed next day. At the end of the second full day, we returned to the room to find one bath towel missing, no bin liner in the room bin, the bathroom bin not emptied and the sheets not changed (my partner had fallen asleep while eating the complimentary chocolate on the bed!). The shower gel dispenser was empty and was not refilled during our stay but I bring my own so couldn't be bothered to raise yet another issue. Another trip to reception resulted in the issues being resolved. The second day there was no orange juice at breakfast - a basic staple for a buffet. Overall, we enjoyed our trip to Chester but the hotel was let down by housekeeping errors and didn't seem like a 4* to us.

    Location, staff, cleanliness all good.

    Shower pressure could be better and pillows uncomfortable
