Sound buildings poor food and staff
Clean and pleasant hotel with ATM next door and some pleasant parks nearby. Food in the general restaurant was mediocre although the Chinese restaurant was good. There is also what appeared to be an independent Chinese restaurant around the back of the hotel in the 'basement' that we would thoroughly recommend. Don't get caught by the issue of paying for laundry which left me feeling deeply humiliated. It was the first time of using laundry services in China and the laundry was duly done. I assumed that the cost would be added to the bill when we checked out as is done throughout the rest of the world. However, I found that I was locked out of my room when we returned late in the evening from my day trip because we had not paid for the laundry immediately. The staff were very difficult about allowing access to my room to get the money out of my safe to pay the bill and after seemingly agreeing that I would access my room, go to the restaurant which closed in 15 minutes and return to pay for my laundry admitted that I had again been locked out of my room and had to again reprogram my keys. It was not just that I was locked out but the humiliating way the staff treated me that makes me mention this here which is, I later discovered, usual in China. Would I stay here again - no - but don.t let my humiliation put you off.

Very nice hotel with only a few issues
We stayed here several nights and liked the location since it was close to several restaurants and convenience stores. The hotel was very nice, and our 6th floor room was plenty large with a shower and tub (requiring a high step to get in). Housekeeping was great each day. We ate breakfast each morning in their 4th floor restaurant which had several different dining rooms, and a pretty good selection of cold and hot items. They did have an omelet station as well as noodle soup made to order. Our room had several quirky features that we thought could have been improved. There were many light switches in the room so it was challenging at times to locate the proper switch for the lights that you wanted off or on, even though most were labeled. We discovered a full-length mirror hidden behind closet doors near the entrance. The other closets and the drawers in them were somewhat cumbersome to use because the closet doors had to be open to access the drawers and when they were open it blocked access to the bathroom. The shower was nice but since it didn’t have a door, the bathroom floor got very wet after each shower use.

Great Stay
I had an amazing stay at Hengshan Garden Hotel during my recent trip to Shanghai. The moment I walked in, I was greeted by the elegant Art Deco design that blended perfectly with modern aesthetics. The lobby was inviting, and the check - in process was smooth, thanks to the friendly and efficient staff. My room was a haven of comfort. It was spacious, with a cozy bed that ensured a great night's sleep. The large windows offered a wonderful view of the city, and the decor was tastefully done. The amenities in the room were top - notch, from the high - speed complimentary Wi - Fi to the well - stocked mini - bar. The bathroom was spotless, equipped with high - quality toiletries and a great shower.

After checking out 6 different hotels in the area for my parents, I decided on Hengshan Garden hotel (Picardie building). The preview was great and we got a good price including lounge access. The newly renovated rooms in classic old school Shanghai style are very nice and quiet. The bathroom was kept nice and clean. The breakfast was good although more geared towards Chinese guest than Western. The beds were super comfortable. The room had a great view of the park and despite being on a busy intersection, there was no noise coming into the room (this may have more to do with the fact 80% of the cars in Shanghai are electric so there is no noise). The location is excellent. You can walk through Xujaihui park and get to all the shopping malls like Grand66, IFC and Metro city. There are so many places to eat, drink and shop in the area. Walk along Hengshan road under the trees around the French Concession. The hotel itself has a very nice garden behind the main building with a small pagoda and pond to sit and relax. The only real negative is that even though we clearly agreed multiple times that my parents would have a late check out as their flight was very late, they were literally kicked out the room. This was really quite upsetting as they are in their 80's. Totally unacceptable. Alice and the staff did apologize but clearly internal communication is terrible. Especially for an hotel this caliber and having all the amazing communication tools available in China, this really left a bad taste in our mouth. So great hotel but confirm, confirm confirm. Note this is newly renovated building next to the main hotel which is older.
