Five-star location, two-star experience, luxury pricing. At 300 PLN, I’d call it quirky. At over 1,000 PLN, it’s simply
The location is magical, overlooking the Wisła River, and our room had a lovely view. The historic building is genuinely charming and has enormous potential. Unfortunately, that’s where the compliments end.
At over 1,000 PLN per night, Hotel Bulwar delivers a remarkable collection of inconveniences masquerading as luxury hospitality. The rooms are desperately overdue for renovation. The ancient carpets feature mysterious stains with serious crime-scene vibes, the advertised A/C was nonexistent, and even the hairdryer appeared to have survived several political regimes. The pillows didn’t fit inside their cases, leaving exposed, unlined pillows to sleep on. Absolutely revolting. There’s precisely ONE accessible electrical outlet, located all the way across the room from the bed. Apparently, charging a phone overnight is an unreasonable modern expectation. Instead of outlets or USB ports, the bedside tables feature absolutely baffling control boxes operating an assortment of mystery lights. Good luck figuring out how to turn off the bathroom light. And ladies, forget about styling your hair: there’s no outlet in the equally poorly designed bathroom, where the shower also lacks so much as a soap rack for a single toiletry. The spa is a dungeon of despair: tiny, dark, uncomfortable facilities that require two hours’ notice to reach anything resembling a usable temperature. (After 1 hour, it produced almost no heat whatsoever). The lovely jacuzzi has been shut down entirely. The hallways are equally tired and dingy, with nasty carpeting and a dark, poorly lit trek to your room. The whole experience is punctuated by enormous, Alice in Wonderland-esque decorative lamps scattered randomly throughout the building, creating a bewildering juxtaposition between the historic architecture and the interior designer’s apparent fetish for oversized lighting fixtures. If only someone had invested as much thought in functional outlets as giant lamps. There’s also no in-room coffee, so we tried the lobby machine, only to be informed it was reserved exclusively for afternoon coffee. Heaven forbid a guest desire caffeine at an unauthorized hour. Historic charm is one thing.
