Matera at its best!
The room we stayed in was the Superior Suite Bifora and it was fabulous. Lots of room to move around and well stocked for a quick breakfast and snacks. the room had the added bonus of the wine cellar which was nice. The host was great with helping us to get to the room from the office as it is about 100 meters away with 30-40 steps. This Cave Room made you feel right in place with the city of Matera.
My only complaint would be better communication about the parking. We arrived to Matera via car and the host provided us with information about how to contact the operator of the parking area and would provide a shuttle to the property from there. I contacted the parking as directed and received an automated response to provide additional details which I did and then no response back from them. I drove to the address and was unable to locate anyone to help us park. We ended up parking a couple of blocks away with no shuttle to the property, but mapping the location it showed a not too long of a walk to get there, but that didn't tell us about the rough walkways and many stairs to carry suitcases down. It was very difficult. On our departure the host provided a shuttle service back to our car which was the way to go and wishing we had that shuttle on arrival. A memory to laugh about.

Loved Matera and the Hotel San Giorgio. If you are still thinking of where to go in Puglia, Matera is a must see-- it feels like a time machine placed you there. Fascinating and beautiful. I wish I remembered the name of the gentleman who met us at the hotel, but as he walked us to our room, he gave us a bit of a tour, discussed the history, and gave us suggestions for our day there. The apartment had everything we needed-- surprising, because it was part cave! They left us snacks and drinks. It was quite pretty (with a nice shower!). Close to everything you'd want to see.
It would have been better had we spent more time in Matera!! Really worth several days.
