Hotell Furusund - I Want To Go Back!

Hotell Furusund is one of those place you return from your trip saying, "Did that really happen?" It is exceptional. Our double room was large enough for us and our backpacks and still provided plenty of space to move around. The bed was comfortable and the view out the window of large cruise ships sailing out to the Baltic was amazing. The bathroom was very nice, also. But the little touches in the room are what made it special: free bottled water, charming pictures of the hotel and people, bathrobes, a welcoming postcard ... and there's more I'm sure I'm forgetting that made it seem like we were coming back to our best home. There's a sauna available for booking that includes a hot tub, as well as a plunge into the Baltic, if you're brave enough. :-) There are gorgeous hiking trails that are well worth taking. The staff at the hotel was very friendly and helpful, also. The hotel's restaurant is terrific! We ate there twice and each night we had great meals. Breakfast was also excellent and is included.

There is nothing that we didn't like except, perhaps, having to leave, :-) The following is not a criticism of our accommodation – It’s information about traveling in the Archipelago in September. On September 1st, ferry travel becomes limited in the Archipelago. We planned to go to nine islands in nine days, arriving as early as possible, hiking the island, staying overnight, then repeating the next day. When we did our planning in June/July, the ferry routes made this look very doable. However, when we started on September 4th, we discovered that routes had been severely reduced, throwing our schedule out the window. We weren't happy. The other visitors/hikers/campers we met weren't happy. Our hosts weren't happy and they have been giving the government an earful about it to no avail. It was a mess. Fortunately, we were able to arrange for water taxis to get us to our next destinations. We eventually wound up needing four water taxis, which is a considerable expense, in addition to always wondering if one would even be available. (Note: Our next stop after Furusund was Vaxholm ... no ferry available at a reasonable time. We took a bus most of the way back to Stockholm, then another bus to Vaxholm.) We loved the Archipelago. The islands and hiking were wonderful, but just be aware of the ferry situation. If you go in September, make sure you can get to where you want to go in a time you want to go. Alternatively, maybe stay two nights in each place so you'll have time to explore. But that said: SAT, be better!
