Il Ghiottone is one of those (all too rare) places where everything feels thought through, but very little feels staged. It is coherent and unique in the sense that it the idiosyncratic consequence of the genius loci and the genius of the hosts. The house, the garden, the surrounding countryside, the food and the pace of the day all seem to belong together in a way that may be quite new to many yet to us it never felt overdone, intrusive or unsettling. Breakfasts were probably our favourite part – which is ironic and telling, as we almost always skip breakfast at home or elsewhere. The multi-course breakfasts were generous and quietly elaborate, with excellent ingredients; different egg dishes every day, fresh cakes, fruit, preserves and other small things appearing each morning. More importantly, they had the pleasant feeling of someone actually having considered what one might like and might need to eat on an August morning in Umbria, rather than simply assembling a generic hotel breakfast. Bravo! The same attention extends elsewhere: the rooms, the objects, the linen, the shampoos, the ceramics, the way things are served. There is plenty of detail, but no fussiness. Hospitality is warm and attentive without becoming overbearing, which is a balance many, far too many places get wrong. What stayed with us most, though, was the atmosphere, the intensified and distilled sense of place. Life is about the very precious moments like the evening aperitivo on the terrace (how many B&B's pour you a glass of natural wine on its premises?). Il Ghiottone feels rooted in its particular bit of Umbria rather than in a generic idea of rural Italy. It is a place with taste, but also with ease, and that combination is rarer than it should be. We didn't go to Todi, we went to Il Ghiottone which is to say that this is certainly not somewhere you happen to stay while seeing the area; it is, in itself, the most worthwhile destination.

A truly beautiful place to stay with superb breakfast.
Breakfast was exceptional, truly enjoyable and a wonderful start to the day. The hillside views were amazing from the terrace and fabulous to enjoy an aperitivo before one heads out for dinner. There is a free bus service across from the church handy if you want to avoid the hilly streets up to Todi centre. Thomas and Elizabeth are great hosts and we were so glad we made the choice to stay despite not having a car. It was so worth it.
Nothing.

A truly special place in Todi. We felt instantly relaxed, well cared for, and never wanted to leave
Il Ghiottone Umbro was truly one of our favorite stays in Italy. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely relaxed — enjoying glasses of wine while gazing out over the incredible Umbrian views. The setting is absolutely breathtaking and feels like something out of a dream. And talking about dreams - we slept like babies - the beds are so cozy. We enjoyed breakfast every morning and it was some of the most amazing food during our stay. The grounds and rooms are lovely and every detail felt thoughtful. The location is also perfect — peaceful and quiet, yet close enough to easily walk into the beautiful town of Todi. Thomas and Elisabeth are such lovely hosts and made the experience feel warm, personal, and special. What a magnificent place to base yourself while exploring Umbria. We are already talking about a return someday soon. A truly special place.
