The Counts Refuge is a unique property that gives real insights into life in the Bari old town!
The property is unique and our hostess was lovely, very responsive, really engaging. She provided updates about the weather and anything we needed to be aware of. She also provided helpful advice about shopping and eating/dining. The property had wonderful views, great neighbours and neighbourhood and close to everything you need to see in the Bari old town.
The property won’t suit all travellers. It is located in the outer edge of the upper old town, a 15-20 minute walk away from the nearest supermarket. There is also no direct access for vehicles, the closest dropoff point was a 5 minute walk away, so difficult if you have a lot of luggage or shopping. We are a family of 4, and bedrooms are located upstairs via a particularly narrow and steep spiral staircase, which happens to be 4 floors high. It was difficult to get our luggage to our bedrooms - and would not recommend the stay for anyone with children, elderly, or anyone with mobility issues. The 2 bedrooms, were on different floors directly accessible via the staircase, there were no doors and minimal privacy. The master bedroom on the third floor can only be reached by walking up the stairs through the second bedroom. This also meant that the lights in each room were not seperate from one another and if one rooms light was on, it lit up the other room. In terms of sleeping, the beds were quite firm, and there was 1 pillow provided per person, with no spare pillows or blankets. We did ask the host about this, who said that there were some in the cupboard, but unfortunately these were missing. Additionally, the master bedrooms bathroom did not include a shower, instead the shower opens into the bedroom directly, which made things very difficult in combination with the minimal privacy. Dining chairs provided were great to move out onto cobblestone alley for meals, given the living space could not fit four people around the dining table. There was a lovely space to eat on the rooftop but you did need to navigate the 4 flights of stairs from the kitchen. There were very limited kitchen resources/utensils (exactly 4 of each item) - despite the apartment being listed as a kitchen, we wouldn’t recommend planning to cook, especially for a family! The accomodation also had no ice cube tray, no salt, no pepper, no toaster.

Fantastic property. Beautifully presented. Huge amount of care from the owner.
Such a beautiful house in the prettiest location in the old town. The roof terrace was an added bonus. Laura, the owner was so lovely. She had paid great care to make sure the three of us had the best girls long weekend and we did! She arranged a taxi for us to the airport as well. The house was quiet at night and it was safe to leave the front door open and watch people go about their lives. We loved it. If you want to stay in a historic property and experience Italian life around you then this is for you. There’s also a brilliant place for breakfast just minutes away. It’s close enough to restaurants to walk.
Absolutely nothing!
