Very Special!
Le Dodici Lune offered a truly special experience and was one of the highlights of our time in Matera. Although we only had one night, staying in a beautifully restored historic cave dwelling gave us a real appreciation for the area's unique history and character. What made the experience even more meaningful was the care the owners had taken to research and share the story of the family who originally lived in our cave. Those personal touches brought the space to life and made it feel much more than simply a place to stay. The staff member who checked us in was incredibly helpful, providing a map of the town along with recommendations on the key sights to see. Given our limited time in Matera, this advice was invaluable and helped us make the most of every moment. Breakfast the following morning was also excellent, with a wonderful selection of local products and freshly prepared options. As a family of four, we stayed in the largest cave suite. While it didn't include one of the in-room spa features found in some of the smaller suites, it was perfectly suited to our needs and remarkably spacious. We were amazed they had managed to incorporate two bathrooms while preserving the cave's authentic character. Arriving by car was straightforward. We parked in a nearby garage recommended by the hosts. While the garage offers a shuttle service, we chose to walk as we only had carry-on luggage, and the walk was very manageable once we found our bearings. The surrounding area feels like stepping into another world. Wandering through the ancient stone streets and learning about the families who once lived there transported us back in time. It was easy to imagine the sense of community that would have existed in the shared courtyards centuries ago. One practical tip for future visitors: wear comfortable footwear with good grip. The historic streets and steps are beautiful but can be quite uneven and slippery in places.

A fabulous stay in a magical town.
A fabulous transformation from the original cave dwelling, still keeping the integrity of a cave hotel.
