Hugely disappointing. Avoid the lodge.
The staff I met were friendly and efficient. My bathroom was new and efficient (I was aware it was not en suite). The bed was comfy. The breakfast was good.
I thought I was staying in a Scottish country-style hotel. It turns out I was in a gatehouse or lodge down the drive from the hotel. This had been chopped about to create (I think) three bedrooms, my separate bathroom, communal kitchen area and dining area (I did not need anything but the bedroom and separate bathroom). Most surprisingly, the lodge lacked any lightshades, either in the hall and even worse in my large bedroom, which was called Macallan. The ambience was terrible with two bare light bulbs hanging from the ceiling. The walls were bare, with no artwork. A large mirror was lent up against a wall. The furniture was a hotch-potch of old and new. It included an old sideboard with lots of ugly scorch marks on it. The "signage" in the lodge was mainly cheap A4 printed sheets stuck up with Sellotape. The main hotel has 4 stars. This rating does NOT apply to the lodge.

Une belle étape
Le cadre du parc, le charme victorien du bâtiment principal, l'amabilité du personnel, l'annexe où nous logions dans une grande chambre, et où nous partagions avec 2 autres chambres une cuisine équipée, une salle à manger et un salon, le petit déjeuner raffiné et copieux dans le château, la proximité de la ville et des commerces, etc.
