A comfortable bed and great location, overshadowed by unacceptable cleanliness issues and a ruined first night.
The bed was very comfortable once I was finally able to sleep in it on the second night. The hotel is on a quiet street in the heart of Ghent, within walking distance of the main attractions. That said, Ghent is a compact city, so location isn’t necessarily a major differentiating factor.
I booked this property largely because of its exceptional reviews, so my experience was particularly disappointing. Before arrival, I was informed that check-in might be delayed because the cleaning team was having difficulty reaching the property due to a railway strike. I had no issue with this, as my own travel was delayed too. Unfortunately, I found multiple hairs throughout the bedding, including beneath the sheets and around the duvet. It was so unpleasant that I couldn’t bring myself to sleep in the bed on my first night. When I reported this, the hotel arranged for all the bedding to be changed the following day. I appreciate that they addressed the complaint, but my first night was already ruined. Whether the strike affected the cleaning arrangements is beside the point. Equally baffling was the absence of hand soap in the bathroom. When I requested some, I was given body wash instead. After explaining that body wash wasn’t hand soap, I was told they were waiting for a soap delivery. No hand soap was subsequently provided. Surely sourcing a simple bar of soap for a guest isn’t an unreasonable expectation? I genuinely hope this was an isolated incident. The hotel has overwhelmingly positive reviews, and I’d like to believe it normally lives up to them. However, basic cleanliness and hygiene should never be compromised. While the bedding issue was corrected for the second night, that doesn’t undo the experience of the first. I hope the hotel learns from this and continues to provide the excellent service other guests have described.
