  On the positive side, we were given a different room than the one we originally booked because the host said there was an issue with ours. I’m not sure whether that was a good thing or not, but the room we received was actually very charming. It was clear that it had been decorated with care and attention to detail. It felt cozy, unique, and comfortable.

  Unfortunately, the check-in experience left a much stronger impression than the room itself. We were expected to arrive at a very specific time, and the host reminded us about it several times by message. We were traveling around Italy by car, coming from another city, with several stops along the way, including picking up our rental car. When you’re on a road trip, it’s almost impossible to predict your exact arrival time. When we arrived a little later than expected, we were actually scolded for it. The host even said several times, “You should thank me for waiting for you.” Honestly, that felt quite rude. We weren’t visiting someone’s home as guests—we were checking into accommodation that we had already paid for. If there are strict check-in hours, this should be clearly stated before booking so guests know what to expect. The check-in process itself took almost an hour. After a long drive, we just wanted to park the car, leave our luggage, have dinner, explore the city a little, and get some rest. Instead, we spent nearly an hour going through paperwork and lengthy explanations before we could finally enter the apartment. Nowadays, most of this could easily be done online in advance by sending documents electronically and using a key lockbox for self check-in. Another issue was that the host spoke almost no English. This alone wouldn’t have been a problem, but because everything had to be translated through a phone, the entire process became very slow. Every little detail was explained multiple times, as if we had never used a key or basic household appliances before. It felt unnecessary and took away valuable time that we would much rather have spent enjoying the city. We also didn’t appreciate the repeated warnings about penalties. Several times we were told that if we stained something there would be a fine, and if we left the apartment dirty there would also be a fine.

  Really nice. Host couldn’t have been more helpful.

  Location was great. Slightly away from the centre, but still only a short walk away

  Pretty warm and uncomfortable at night, but to be fair, we stayed right in the middle of a heatwave so that was to be expected
