  Disappointing and not what we expected

  The historic building has some architectural charm, and we appreciated being moved to a larger room after raising our initial concerns. I enjoyed using the swimming pool, although it appeared poorly maintained and not particularly clean. Unfortunately, these were the only positives in an otherwise very disappointing stay.

  Our four nights at Palazzo Donna Elisabetta were the only disappointing aspect of an otherwise wonderful holiday travelling around Puglia. We travel extensively and are familiar with genuinely excellent five-star hotels. In our opinion, this property fell nowhere near that standard. It felt more like a guesthouse than a luxury hotel. We specifically booked accommodation advertised as having a terrace, which was an important reason for choosing the property. On arrival, we were allocated a cramped room with no terrace and only one small wooden chair. We were “upgraded “to a larger room the following day, but this also had no terrace. The replacement room had an unpleasant musty, damp smell, and the air conditioning was completely ineffective, leaving the accommodation uncomfortably hot. The bathroom was internal, without a window. Most frustratingly, we never received the accommodation we had specifically booked. We subsequently discovered that the reference to the terrace had disappeared from the property’s listing, although we retained evidence of the original description. When we complained, management dismissed our concerns as unfounded, referring to the property’s high guest rating rather than addressing the individual problems. We found this response particularly disappointing and unprofessional. Having subsequently read other reviews, I discovered that previous guests had raised similar concerns about damp smells, air conditioning, maintenance and the standard of accommodation. The attractive historic building does not compensate for inadequate facilities, poor maintenance and accommodation that does not match its advertised description. We stayed in several lovely properties during our holiday and experienced wonderful hospitality throughout Puglia. Sadly, Palazzo Donna Elisabetta was the one exception. We certainly would not return and cannot recommend it to anyone expecting a genuine five-star experience.
