    Fantastic, well-located base for Tongariro trips

    We booked this place specifically as our base when we planned to hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. It’s about a 40-minute easy drive straight to the crossing trailhead, which is such a perfect distance: far enough from the busy national park crowds that the whole area is totally quiet, but close enough that you won’t have to drag yourself out at 5am to fight for a parking spot or catch the early trailhead shuttle. We ended up not being able to do the hike due to a last-minute weather closure, but that didn’t take away from our stay at all: the house was spotlessly clean, super tidy, and so cozy and peaceful that we slept really well even with the cold, drizzly weather outside. It’s also a short, straightforward drive into town to grab groceries, trail snacks, warm drinks or a hot meal — no annoying detours at all. Lesley and Dave were such thoughtful, responsive hosts, even helping us sort out our invoice for work reimbursement super quickly. We’ll absolutely book this spot again on our next trip up, when we finally get to finish the crossing! Highly recommend.

    Out fishing all day so had a good time

    Location good

    The firewood is green and damp The wood shed roof leaks over the kindling The bed was not comfortable at all The TV aerial needs connecting
