The location and the design.
Beautiful design, but misleading photos and extremely cramped Ratu Village is a beautiful place with a lovely design, and unfortunately that's about all there is to say for it. The listing is somewhat misleading. The photos make everything look spacious, and I was under the impression there were two beds, one upstairs and one downstairs. That turned out not to be the case. We're travelling with a four-year-old and selected an extra mattress, for which they charge IDR 500,000, more than half the price of a night's stay. It does include an extra breakfast, but the breakfast is mediocre and made without much care. Breakfast is brought to the room. There are only two chairs, so our child had to eat on the floor. The dirty plates are then left for hours, which attracts insects and other animals. The apartment is extremely small. There's barely room to open a suitcase and there are no wardrobes. It's the smallest room I've come across so far in Southeast Asia. The air conditioning hardly blows any cold air, there's no mosquito net, and there are mosquitoes. During my first shower the shower head fell on my head, although to be fair they did fix it. The beds aren't great either. A word of warning about the stairs: there are large gaps between the steps, so you really have to watch out on the way down, especially with a child. The drinks were a letdown too. The banana juice was undrinkable. My girlfriend ordered a cappuccino that never arrived. When she went to ask where it was, she was told they didn't have it, rather than being offered a coffee they did have. The last two days there were no bath towels, because they were finished. Just Beach towels. They also offer a laundry service at IDR 45,000 per kilo, where the normal rate is IDR 15,000 to 20,000 per kilo. I was happy to pay a bit more, as this place is pricier than average, but I ended up feeling let down.
