An absolutely perfect place to stay
We loved everything about this property and the owner Tome-San and her husband. They were very kind hosts. As soon as we arrived, we were taken to the snug bar for a complementary drink - sparkling sake in my case. It’s a beautiful old property with such character. The Japanese breakfast Tome-San made was delicious and made with such care. A perfect and characterful place to stay if in Kyoto.

A lovely Ryokan in a charming peaceful neighbourhood of Kyoto-an absolute must!
Where does one start! Tome was an excellent host-she could not do more for her guests- recommending restaurants and even booking them for us and writing out menu choices for us for a restaurant where they did not have any English -as well as recommending places to visit that suited the rainy conditions. She was so kind, welcoming and helpful. The Room was lovely with a view over Tome's charming interior courtyard garden- the futons were very comfortable and it was very quiet and peaceful -a perfect haven. Breakfasts were a real treat. And the best surprise was Tome's hobby bar that she opened some evenings for a pre dinner drink. Thank you Tome for all your help you really made our visit to Kyoto.

Amazing!!!
We enjoyed our stay from start to finish and enjoyed every little thing. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted warmly by Tome, our host. Our room was clean and spacious and had lovely amenities. Tome and her husband made us a beautifully presented breakfast each morning clearly made with love and Tome took the time every day to help each guest plan their day and helped make reservations at local restaurants. Tome shared local tips and hidden gems, which made our trip so much more enjoyable! Tome is the sweetest and kindest host, who will make you smile from ear to ear. She truly lights up the room and loves what she does, which makes you feel so welcome and cared for. We would highly recommend!!
We wish we could stay longer!

Beautiful building, beautiful family, phenomenal service. The best place I stayed in Japan
I have never felt so looked after in a place that I have paid to stay, as I did at Mugen. Tome and her husband run an amazing business. Breakfast was traditional and fabulous and full of delights from local businesses. The building and garden are beautiful and beautifully looked after (and made by Tome's husband). There was tea and sweet treats each day. Tome is an absolute superstar - brimming with knowledge of Kyoto and happy to provide daily tips on trips and food. She has a passion-project bar across the courtyard that she very generously invited us into, playing albums and sharing her favourite Japanese brews and sharing stories of the world. I would go back to Japan just to stay at Ryokan Mugen again - it should have only been a beautiful Japanese house, but in fact it was like being nurtured and loved.
Everything was perfect
