Feel like a BIG Scam to Me
I am extremely disappointed with my experience at this hotel. After my stay, the hotel charged my credit card $500 for an alleged smoking violation without notifying me first, conducting a proper investigation, or giving me any opportunity to respond. The accusation appears to be based solely on a smoke detection device, yet no one contacted me to verify the facts before imposing the charge. I do not smoke, have never smoked, and was staying in the room only with my 11-year-old daughter, who also does not smoke. There were no other guests or visitors in the room during our stay. Despite this, the hotel immediately processed a substantial charge against my card and accused me of violating their policy. What concerns me most is the lack of due process and transparency. If a hotel is going to impose a $500 penalty, guests deserve to be notified, presented with evidence, and given an opportunity to explain before being charged. Instead, I was left feeling blindsided, distressed, and unfairly treated. I have requested that the hotel provide the evidence, reports, and information used to justify this charge, as I strongly dispute the allegation. I cannot recommend this hotel to others. Guests should be aware that they may face significant charges based on detector readings alone, without prior communication or verification. My experience has left me feeling frustrated, anxious, and disappointed by the hotel’s handling of this situation. This feels like a BIG SCAM!

Avoid avoid avoid !!!
We stayed for 2 nights as part of a cruise package on a room only basis - organised by our travel agent who recommended The Gates for its location and convenience - which is about the only positive I can write about. I did look at the reviews prior to committing to the booking and all recent reviews were good. On arrival at the hotel I thought the reception area was very small, dark and unwelcoming, but I remained positive. I also found it strange that at check in and check out I had to ask for receipts of any payments made, ie guarantee with credit card and the final Bill, all other hotels I've visited, I have automatically been given receipts. I checked our bill at check out and all seemed in order - until I was checking my credit card statement after the holiday some ten days later. To my horror I was charged £500 to my credit card for smoking in our room !!!!! Both my husband and I are non smokers and are both recovering from recent cancer operations. One of the reasons for taking this trip was to celebrate us being cancer free (fingers crossed). After contacting the hotel we were advised that an alarm was triggered in our room which detected smoke! This was never related to us at any point during our stay or at check out. After many emails and phone calls to the hotel we finally ended up having to email proof that both my husband and I had been diagnosed with cancer! I was absolutely astounded that we were asked to provide proof of this- the documentation is full of our personal details! At the end of the day some people with cancer still choose to smoke so it was totally irrelevant to our situation. It took about 2-3 weeks to sort out the issue, with the payment only recently being credited back to my credit card. I have never been so dismayed, frustrated, angry and upset about a hotel stay. Never ever again !

Don’t stay here!
Truly awful. I lasted there a total of ten minutes. The photos on the website do not match the experience at all. Carpets in the hallways were stained and dirty, The room was dirty as well. Bathroom countertops were not cleaned. Windows were dirty and the blinds were lopsided. Additionally, the room faced a wall so there was zero natural sunlight. I asked for a refund but was only refunded 25% of my prepaid rooms. Also, this hotel charged me $478 in incidental fees per room! Lastly, the pool is facing a very busy road with cars and buses going by. They fail to show that on the website too.
