The staff were absolutely delightful, the reception and lounge area was gorgeous. Our accessible room was okay. The breakfast was plentiful, especially as I'm a fussy eater.
The cupboard door, in the room, to access the coffee making facilities was broken. The iron had black all over it meaning to use it you had to iron over a towel.

Over priced but an iconic builiding. Mediocre rooms.
The building is stunning, iconic. Ceilings, decor, general public and lounge areas are exceptional. The staff were very helpful. Locality and access to the train station - plus an easy walk into York. They offer large umbrellas to hire, £2 for 48hrs. There is a 13m pool, a sauna and a steam room which add to the experience. Water was provided in the fridge. I also really liked the gents toilets, old fashioned British, classic. The breakfast was nice; the buffet location and selection were ideal for setting up for the day wandering around York. The view from our (second) room in the Sidings looked over the front of the hotel and side of the railway station which was pretty cool. (We were move to the 3rd floor, car park side).
The first room we were allocated (in the Sidings, ground floor, facing the road and Royal Mail depot) was horrendous - almost unfit to offer as a room - especially at the price we paid. The bed was very small, the room was very small and dark. The bathroom needs updating. The bathroom in our second room also needs updating; bath over flow was broken, shower screen seal mouldy, skirting and floor dusty. The carpet in the hallway, to walk from the main hotel past the Convention Centre really did smell very bad. More cereal choices for breakfast would have been a bonus.

It helped us for the purpose of our visit.
Access to room, size of room and layout. Staff were very nice, pleasant and helpful.
I think glass drinking vessels in bathrooms are dangerous. Where the kettle was situated was not appropriate. Toilet area lacked a toilet brush. The entrance area from the door ( wood ) needed to be washed for a lot of foot fall. Restaurant was fairly basic for choice.
