A very disappointing experience for a 5-star hotel
The Rescape Miyakojima presents itself as a luxury property immersed in nature, but unfortunately our experience was far from what we would expect from a 5-star hotel. The maintenance of the rooms was seriously lacking. We encountered various insects and small creatures inside the room, as well as a dirty shower and an overall sense of neglect. The private pool was particularly disappointing, with visible mould, rust and chipped areas — conditions that are difficult to reconcile with a luxury property. The lack of proper maintenance was not limited to the room. Even the air-conditioning vents in the reception area appeared to be covered with mould, which was particularly concerning in a space that should immediately convey cleanliness and attention to detail. The hotel is also advertised as offering a sea view, but in reality the view from our room was largely obstructed by overgrown and poorly maintained vegetation. The plants and trees had clearly not been properly pruned, making the promised sea view considerably less impressive than expected. When I raised these issues and requested a refund because I intended to leave the property, I was told — in a manner I found rather dismissive and even derisive — that insects should be expected because the hotel is surrounded by nature. Of course, staying in a property immersed in nature naturally means that the occasional insect may appear. That, however, is very different from using the surrounding nature as an excuse for inadequate cleaning and maintenance. Mould, rust, dirt, damaged fixtures and neglected vegetation are matters of upkeep, not an inevitable consequence of the location. What was most disappointing was the considerable gap between the 5-star positioning and the actual standard of the property and services. In our experience, the hotel offers the appearance and pricing of a luxury resort, while the level of maintenance and service felt closer to that of a much lower-category property.
