Beautiful location, but significant issues with privacy and accommodation

The location of The Smiddy Roshven is beautiful and is the strongest aspect of the property. It is less than half a mile from two quiet, private beaches with exceptionally clear water, perfect for swimming. It is also well placed for exploring the area, including boat trips from Arisaig to Eigg, Rum and Muck, the ferry from Ardnamurchan to the Isle of Mull, and visits to the most westerly point on mainland Great Britain. As a base for exploring this stunning part of Scotland, the location is excellent.

Unfortunately, the property offers very little privacy. It is less than 100 yards from the owner’s house, and the garden is not private. Several properties have rights of access across it, and dogs regularly pass through off lead. During our stay, the gardener worked outside for a significant period and a window cleaner also arrived. We were not informed about either visit. While the window cleaner was there, my partner had to run into the bathroom to close the window while I was showering, which was extremely uncomfortable. Dog policy The pet restrictions were not made sufficiently clear before booking. The owner does not like dogs being left alone and provides additional rules after booking, including that pets are only allowed in the kitchen. Before our stay, we explained that our dog would need to be left alone on some days, and the owner agreed. He is accustomed to this and has stayed at many properties throughout the UK and the Isle of Man without any problems. However, when we left our older dog at the property for one day while visiting Eigg, the owner told us he had apparently been distressed and that she had considered entering the property to remove him. She confirmed that the gardener had been working outside all morning, which may have caused the distress. The possibility of the owner entering the property made it difficult to relax for the rest of our stay. If you are travelling with a dog, clarify all pet rules and arrangements in writing before booking. I would not recommend this property for anyone needing a secure garden or who plans to leave their dog alone. Accommodation The accommodation is very basic, consisting of a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. There is no separate seating area, so the only real place to sit is on the bed. This may be unsuitable for stays of more than a couple of nights. Water quality The shower water came out brown and noticeably affected my hair.

    Idyllic and beautifully thought out

Lovely walk to a secluded white sandy beach, fresh local eggs, great water pressure in the shower, midge nets for the windows so you can leave them open, lovely cosy decor, has everything you could possibly need, parking next to the property, short drive to mallaig/white sands, saw sea eagles above the road to the Smiddy.

Very warm in summer, I recommend bringing a fan like we did.
