  The worst stay ever - Zero hygiene with rat as additional Guest

  The team checked in daily to ask when we wanted the villa cleaned, and they did come as scheduled. The photos on the listing are accurate — the property does look as pictured.

  We spent over 18 days in Bali, staying across multiple properties in different areas. Out of every place we stayed in, Villa Sungai was by far the worst experience. We were here for seven nights as a family of five (three adults and two children, age 12). Cleanliness was the biggest issue. Spider webs were present throughout the villa, particularly in the bathrooms. Spiders were found inside the bedrooms on multiple occasions. I understand geckos and ants are normal in a tropical jungle setting — spider webs are not. They indicate the property has not been properly cleaned in a long time. A rat was spotted in the garden, and the living room had a persistent unpleasant smell. The cleaning team also left doors open while cleaning, allowing geckos into the rooms and bathrooms. One of our family members was bitten by a spider inside the villa. The bite required a visit to a medical center for treatment. She could not walk properly for approximately two days, which directly affected our planned activities. The listing advertises a washing machine. It was not working on arrival. It took two days to attempt a repair, and when it was finally running, the machine was so filthy and neglected that we could not put our clothes in it. For a family of five on a seven-night stay, this was a serious problem. The listing states the villa is 15–20 minutes from Ubud center with no mention of traffic. In reality, it took 45 minutes to one hour during normal conditions. The villa is in a remote area where Gojek drivers cannot locate the property, forcing us to arrange private transfers at additional cost. Food delivery through Gojek was essentially impossible — drivers would decline or demand 100,000 IDR or more just to deliver. Even ordering a meal to the villa was not an option. After we checked out, a staff member sent a message asking whether we had taken the water faucet from the bathroom sink. An unusual message to receive after departure.

  Great Villa, brilliant staff.

  The villa is a new and built to a high standard. It is comfortable, well appointed and managed excellently by Balisuperhosts. I would not hesitate to recommend staying in one of their Villas. This Villa is a little out of the way and you can’t really walk anywhere for meals, shops etc. That said Gojek is so cheap for transport I would rather stay outside of town centres so you have the option of somewhere quiet to go back to.

  When writing reviews I have to be honest and there were a number of teething problems with the Villa because it is so new. The electric tripped a few times meaning we had no water (it’s all pumped), the swimming pool pumps weren’t working properly so we couldn’t use the pool for the day, outdoor lighting went off one evening. Overall we had small issues probably 4-5 consecutive days. That said on every occasion the staff were there straight away and got things back up and running swiftly. It didn’t spoil our time at the villa and I’d definitely go back, but some people may be less tolerant when they are away for a break.
