Needs attention to maintenance, cleanliness and the presentation of its history

Although the farm has a lot of history and I imagine it must be beautiful during the flowering season, we unfortunately found our stay rather disappointing. There is a strong emphasis on the history of the farm, its monuments and graves, but we felt that these areas were generally neglected and lacked information. The old jail museum was dusty, and the list of items on display did not appear to be complete. The little bakoondjie was interesting to see, but there was no information provided to explain its significance. I found the old graves particularly fascinating, but again, they were not well maintained. One of the graves, that of Ellie Louw, was especially neglected. There are also two headstones with exactly the same inscription, which we found intriguing — but there was no information explaining why. These are the kinds of historical details that could really add to the experience. The self-catering unit itself was comfortable enough for the price we paid, and the beds were comfortable. However, there were a few things that left us disappointed. We were provided with only one toilet roll, and there was a rather unpleasant notice on the fridge instructing guests not to leave dirty dishes behind. Most guests would naturally wash their dishes, but we feel that cleaning the dishes should perhaps be part of the service provided, rather than being presented as a warning. Our lights also kept flickering on and off during our stay, although we weren't sure what was causing this. I really don't enjoy leaving negative reviews, particularly when a place has so much potential. With some attention to maintenance, cleaning, better historical information and a little more care given to the heritage aspects of the property, this could be a wonderful place to visit. It’s a place with great potential, but it needs more attention to maintenance, cleanliness and the presentation of its history. Sadly, we left disappointed and will try somewhere else next time.

Exactly what we expect from a farm stay.

Location perfect. Cottage on farm so authentic, comfortable and quiet. Electric blankets perfect for cold and windy night. Most beautiful sunset I have ever seen.
