    Really nicely built, not too far from the most important spots in Kyoto. The bathrooms were really nice, especially the bathtub.

    Gets extremely hot because of the wooden construction, some of the windows would not open properly and there wasn’t enough protection against various insects (including mosquitoes) from entering the rooms. The secondary room for the makeshift bed had no natural light because of this, since we couldn’t open the window properly (basically at all) and also keep protection against mosquitoes. The bed option for the third person was an extremely thin mattress. I had to actually stack up 4 mattresses and 2 thick blankets in order to make the bed not feel like I’m sleeping on rocks. The other two beds were fine because they were proper beds. You don’t need to sleep on the floor in order to have the “authentic” Japanese experience.

    Amazing location, great value, great comfort.

    The location is amazing, especially if you want to be in the heart of Kyoto. Having lived at a hotels during most of our trip. This was a nice break to give us more space to move around as a family and really have a comfortable homebase as we explored the city and the surrounding area. Having a washer and dryer available to refresh our clothes in the middle of the trip was also great.

    Wonderful stay and a unique traditional experience.

    We had a really enjoyable experience here. The entire place was very tidy and clean, and we like the location. It was a short walk from many restaurants activities and shops. Also there was great communication with the host at all times. We experienced no problems during our stay. And the air conditioning worked very good!

    Fabulously clean and traditional machiya in the middle of Kyoto!

    Wanted you to know that we thoroughly enjoyed staying at this traditional Kyoto machiya and the experience of staying there. It was incredibly clean and so well organized. The garden in the middle of the machiya is so beautiful and one night it just poured rain and thundered and we sat in the sofa and enjoyed watching the garden with some hot tea. It's a very special home and the owners/hosts are so welcoming and very helpful with any questions. My husband and I slept on the full-size mattresses and our 3 teens slept on the mats on the floor and all slept very well, very comfortable! I would absolutely recommend this machiya to anyone looking for a more traditional stay in Kyoto vs. a hotel.

    No complaints!
